Egypt president's son, family flee to Britain

Arab Herald (IANS) Tuesday 25th January, 2011

Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's son who is considered as his successor has fled to Britain along with his family, US-based Arabic website Akhbar al-Arab reported.

The plane with Gamal Mubarak, his wife and daughter on board left for London Tuesday from an airport in western Cairo, the website said.

The report came as violent unrest broke out in Cairo and other Egyptian cities and hundreds of thousands of people reportedly took to the streets in a Tunisia-inspired day of revolt.

The protesters want Egyptian government to end its 30-year state of emergency and pass a law preventing a president from serving more than two terms, and want the interior minister Habib al-Adly, to resign.

Protests in Egypt broke out after opposition groups waged an internet campaign inspired by the Tunisian uprising. Weeks of unrest in Tunisia eventually toppled president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali earlier this month.

A police officer was killed in clashes Tuesday in central Cairo, Egyptian daily al-Wafd reported.

Over 30,000 protesters gathered in Cairo's Maidan al-Tahrir square to take part in the 'day of anger', the spokesman for Egypt's '6 April' opposition movement, Mohammed Adel, said.

'Police used tear gas and water canon to break up our protest and they arrested 40 of us, but we don't have official figures on the numbers of arrests across Egypt,' said Adel.

Our revolution, the revolution of all Egyptians it just starts to bring down the dictatorship of Mubarak. We will be proceeding with a legal case against you Mubarak for the corruption and misusing public funds and money-laundering during 30year rule. We will investigate the foreign assets, illegal transactions and foreign bank accounts. We will pursue you even if you flee to Saudi Arabia, We will ensure the regime and family members are investigated and brought to justice. We will be seeking the international governments to a freeze any assets belong Mr. Mubarak and his family. (We estimate the stolen funds at $15bn). We will be proceeding with treason charges against your wife and yours sons. We will also pursue the corrupted media and bring freedom to the press. You will not be elected again Mubarak; the new elections will be free and bring about democratic reforms to Egypt.

I would hope for a peaceful democratic change. But, it won't happen. The Far Right Wing of the Muslims will use this opportunity to grab control of the government. This will lead to Christian deaths, and a radical stronghold in Egypt. Which, along with Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of AlQueda.

I'm sure SOS Clinton's private comments to her husband about the Middle East are quite different than her public statements to soothe the seething Arabs. Don't forget, we got democracy in the Middle East in the form of Hamas, too. Wish for democracy in insane cultures and you'll get Sharia Law and al Qaeda.

This is very bad. The Radical Muslim Terrorists will just turn Egypt into another Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards murdered over 2 million people in Iran after they took over. The rich, the well-educated, and foreign-educated were targeted first. They were arrested and murdered. Entire families wiped out. This will now happen in Egypt too... Many foolish people in Egypt are not pleased with Mubarak, complain about his policies, and want him gone. But what the new Egyptian Revolutionary Guards will do when they take over will make everything Mubarak has done look like a paradise... Europe and America will end up breaking diplomatic ties with Egypt. American Foreign Aid to Egypt represents over 1/3 of the Egyptian Annual Budget. Tourism to Egypt will dry up and die. I have friends in Egypt. I hope they get out in time. While they still can. This is very very bad for the Egyptian people.

The most important thing to Egyptians is that they have a government of their choosing, whatever that turns out to be. I get the distinct impression that a US appointed Regional Governor is becoming pass. What disturbs me more than anything is why does a civilized world permit these crooks flee with all their loot to live the rest of their lives in luxury. They should be arrested as soon as the plane lands, their money confiscated and they with the money should be returned to their country. Just because someone claims a political title does not make them immune to crime, quite the contrary they should be held to a higher standard. My guess is the royal family in Saudi Arabia having trouble sleeping lately.

A politician can never be totally honest. The nature of their business requires that they satisfy many, "Masters," every time they speak. It's not necessarily stupidity but that they have many pressures from the Boss, the voters, the allies, their party, and actually, our adversaries. Every statement must be weighed in the context of the results you want to achieve. All of this can be very complicated. Whereas, a private pundant or professor can say anything he or she wants, and not have to worry about getting an embassy bombed or losing access to a critical airfield. It's a game that is played by insiders. We should not expect to be privy to everything that goes on in that world. We should however, expect our reps to be smart and achieve the upper hand most often for our country. If that doesn't happen, then an error in judgement may have occurred. Every chess master looses occasionally. It's not because they're stupid.

I suppose, with a potential fundamentalist Islamic state in Egypt, and Iran on her Western and Northern (Hizbollah) flank, Israel will be forced by Obama and the UK to salami-slice herself up even more. Technology has advanced to the point that mistakes of the past cannot be repeated. If the same type of violence is repeated, even if successful, Egypt should plan on a radioactive nile. NO God, Jewish, Christian or Islamic would want this on His people and land. Self government by peaceful determination is the best. Turn to the east and lose, ask Turkey, learn history and peace. Just a humble opinion in a dangerous world. Egypt does not have it bad in comparison to other countries. Mubarack's son should stay out of his home country if he is afraid of his own people. I agree with Pappione about too many Americans being satisfied with "bread and circuses." But no need to learn Mandarin. I live and work in Asia. China and neighboring countries lack a civil society. It takes a strong cultural infrastructure (rule of law, a moral ethic, etc.) for a society to build upon if it wishes to be great. Constructing buildings and highways (on an unstable foundation) only impresses the wide-eyed and the naive.

If the Hashemite's would abdicate, a natural border separating Palestine and Israel at the Jordan River could be establish then the Arab - Jewish problem would be solved! But no--you still want to cling on to the old ways of a vast Zionist conspiracy!

Revolutions do not happen unless there is hope for their success. A revolution properly is defined as a rebellion which achieves "more" freedom for the individual human being rather than "less" freedom for him. Freedom to do what? Freedom to exercise his rights. I refer to the unalienable and perfectly-natural and universally-valid human rights of life, liberty, private property, and the pursuit of personal happiness. The first article of private property is "the self" and all other rights are derivatives of and flow from these cardinal rights. These rights ---- The Rights of Man ---- are the gift of nature or of nature's god ---- and they belong to all human beings, everywhere.

If the moovement is anti imperialist then US can not easily prop up the newcomers. US seems to support the known over the unknown.

Well...Here is another muslim country (Egypt) Obummer can run and hide in when he gets thrown out of office in 2012....Because he will NOT be able to show his "Long Form" birth certificate that a bunch of States are going to demand for him to run for POTUS again!!! Going to be real interesting!!!

at least This US government, unlike that under Carter, realizes that Egypt isn't ready for true Democracy (unlike Iran during Carter's helm).

Johnny S you are a predictable Zionist apologist probably on the mossad payroll to respond to comments that expose open Israeli State sponsored genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza Strip. Have you been there? I have with the UN Inspector. It is an Israeli prison camp in plain sight to whom the USA and Israel bribed Mubarak Regime to keep contained while people inside starve and UN relief centre deliberate target by the IDF in obvious war crime to which Mubarak is complicit war crime accessory among other crime(s).

Perhaps countries with dominant muslim citizens, the majority of which have never read anything but parts of the koran, and who know nothing but what their 'religious leaders' have taught them ("hate/kill everybody not in this room") are not the best candidates to enjoy democracy. if an electorate is solely composed of 9th century intellectuals & their devotees, a 21st century dictator unwilling to allow his country to slide back 1300 years might just a be preferable situation.

Mubarak needs to drop the hammer down hard on the radical Egyptian. Why do some people think that everyone deserves 'freedom'. The Arab Muslim needs to controlled and put down hard not given freedom. The don't deserve freedom and certainly will not act responsibily. Iran and house of saud have the right idea, treat the people like slaves its what they know and need.

I am deeply conerned if this group that are protesting aren't just another group of radical jihadists? If that is so, it would bring even more unstability to a shakey region if they take over the government. Yet, we do know that the Egyptian gov't is corrupt for only allowing one rule for so many years.

Better a Iran constitional elected Government than a Dictator. Iran will be forced into legal elections and problems will cease.

Our nuclear programmes are completely transparent. But we are ready to show greater transparency and make clear for the whole world that the steps of the Islamic Republic of Iran are completely within international frameworks. The sanctions are unfair, the Iranian people are suffering, and our (nuclear) activities are legal. These sanctions are illegal and only benefit Israel.
