I get the distinct impression that a US appointed Regional Governor is becoming passé. I agree with Pappione about too many Americans being satisfied with "bread and circuses." But no need to learn Mandarin. I live and work in Asia. China and neighboring countries lack a civil society. It takes a strong cultural infrastructure (rule of law, a moral ethic, etc.) for a society to build upon if it wishes to be great. Constructing buildings and highways (on an unstable foundation) only impresses the wide-eyed and the naive.

Part 2: The Palestinians have a country but because of the tribal warfare with the Saudis, the Hashemites were kicked out of there own home!
