Israel border area awash with troops following terror alert
Arab Herald Friday 23rd September, 2011
An urgent terror alert was called in southern Israel on Friday following defence warnings of an imminent attack from Hamas terrorists.
Defence chiefs warned that information had been received about an intention from Hamas and other terror groups to carry out attacks on the Israel-Egypt border.
IDF forces in the border areas of southern Israel were suddenly boosted as the alert level was raised.
According to Ynet, IDF officials said the terror plot was possibly an attempt to undermine the Palestinian Authority's statehood bid at the United Nations.
Large army forces were already at the border following a terror offensive four weeks ago near Eilat, in which eight Israelis died.
The troops were boosted further two weeks ago when another warning was issued of a terror cell comprising at least 10 members in the region.
According to IDF officials, military presence in the area is now being reinforced with advanced technology and Air Force support.
