Guwahati (Assam) [India], April 4 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday took a veiled dig at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over his remarks about Eid prayers saying that they were a source of shame for the State.
Gogoi, speaking during the Lok Sabha debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill, accused the Central government of preventing Muslims from offering Eid prayers in the streets.
Addressing a press conference, Assam CM said, 'An MP from Assam had said during the debate on Waqf in Lok Sabha that the Muslim community should be allowed to offer namaz on the road. He made a speech as if the Freedom Movement was undertaken by one particular community and that Hindu community did not participate at all.'
Chief Minister Sarma also apologised to the people for Gogoi's statement.
'People across the country and outside called me up and asked me what kind of people have been elected to the Parliament. This is a matter of shame for us. Saying such things has harmed Assam. I apologise to the people for the statement he made in Parliament that an MP from Assam made such absurd statements in the House,' Sarma said.
Chief Minister Sarma claimed that people of the state Sill teach Gogoi a lesson over his remarks about Eid prayers.
'We are ashamed, and I apologise to the people of this country. I hope that the people of Assam will definitely teach a lesson when the time comes,' Sarma said.
He dismissed Gogoi's claim that the Muslim community was being denied permission to offer prayers in the street, stating that there has never been any such demand in Assam.
'Never did Muslims in Assam demand permission to offer Namaz on roads. There are mosques and eidgahs. They offer Namaz there. There has never been any issue,' Assam CM said. (ANI)
